English Department

The Department of English offers a program that provides students with an understanding of the humanistic tradition in literature. Its curriculum gives students certain goals, including participation in courses that are a part of an ongoing process of learning, and the skillful communication of thought. The courses are designed to provide both continuity and diversity.

English courses develop writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills, as well as foster an appreciation of literature and the humanities. In addition, by offering internships in related communications fields, the English Department encourages students to plan for a career.

All students in the baccalaureate program in English will:

  • Understand the humanistic tradition in literature and the skills necessary to express that understanding
  • Acquire a range of knowledge of English, American, and world literatures
  • Understand the elements of literature, and apply that understanding in critical analyses of particular texts

During course work for the English major, each student is responsible for assembling a portfolio of written work representing the following areas:

  • Medieval Literature
  • Renaissance Literature
  • Restoration-Eighteenth Century British Literature
  • Nineteenth Century British Literature
  • Twentieth Century British Literature
  • Nineteenth Century American Literature
  • Twentieth Century American Literature

  • ENG 201 World Literature I
    and
  • ENG 202 World Literature II

  • ENG 211 Survey of English Literature I

B. Choose eight upper-level (300+) English courses-24 credits

During this course work, the student is responsible for assembling a portfolio of written work representing British, American, and world literature and six of the following areas:

  • Medieval Literature
  • Renaissance Literature
  • Restoration-Eighteenth Century British Literature
  • Nineteenth Century British Literature
  • Twentieth Century British Literature
  • Nineteenth Century American Literature
  • Twentieth Century American Literature
  • World Literature
  • A particular genre (i.e., film, journalism)

    • NOTE: Secondary education majors need ENG 391, ‘History of the English Language.’




Major in English with a writing concentration

A. Choose six credits:

  • ENG 201 World Literature I
    and
  • ENG 202 World Literature II
    or
  • ENG 211 Survey of English Literature I
    and
