Applying For Financial Aid
A complete financial aid application consists of the following:

  • A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal FAFSA This form may take four to six weeks to process. The Elms College code for FAFSA is 002140. If you have provided the Elms College code, the Department of Education will forward an electronic
copy of your completed FAFSA to the college. Students may apply on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  • A completed Elms College financial aid application.
  • A signed copy of student’s most recent Federal Income Tax Returns (1040,1040A/EZ or Telefile Worksheet. Please note: Telefile worksheets must also be signed.) All schedules and W-2’s are also required. OR Income Statement for Non-filers. (Form available at Student Financial Aid Services.)

Student Financial Aid Services reserves the right to request additional information.

Note: All students must be accepted for admission to Elms College before aid eligibility will be determined and awarded. Financial need has no bearing on your admission to Elms College.

Determination of Financial Aid Eligibility
Elms College awards federal financial aid to graduate students on the basis of demonstrated financial need. A federal formula is utilized in calculating a family contribution based on information provided on FAFSA, along with all of the required supporting documentation. The expected family contribution is based on a review of the family’s resources from expected taxed and untaxed income along with assets such as savings. The family contribution is deducted from the student’s cost of attendance resulting in the family’s “need”. The amount of need a family demonstrates determines the amount of assistance the
student may be eligible to receive.

Financial Aid for Graduate Students
Elms College recognizes the fact that financing a graduate education is a significant investment for students and their families. While it is the responsibility of the student to pay college expenses prior to the beginning of each semester,
Elms College is aware that many families may require financial assistance.

Students anticipating the need for financial aid should submit a complete financial aid application by the priority-filing deadline each year. Awards are based on demonstrated need.

Financial aid is not renewable; students must reapply for aid each academic year. Please note: if financial circumstances remain unchanged from year to year and applicants meet the priority-filing deadline, the financial aid package should contain approximately the same amount of aid.

Changes to family financial circumstances come in many forms:

  • increases or decreases in overall income,
  • the number of family members in the
    household,
  • the number of family members in college.

Types of Financial Aid Available to Graduate
Students at Elms College

An Elms College financial aid award may be comprised of funds from federal sources. We encourage families to apply for all types of aid including several scholarship opportunities offered by the admission office.
Need-based financial aid from federal, state, and institutional sources is available in the following forms:

  • Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans - Need-based federally insured and subsidized loans awarded to students. Maximum loan amount for graduate students annually is $8,500. The interest rate is variable, capped at 8.25 percent. There is an origination fee deducted from the loan prior to the minimum of two equal disbursements made to the student’s account. Repayment begins six months after a student ceases to be enrolled at least halftime.
  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans - Federally insured loans awarded to students who do not demonstrate federal need. The federal government does not subsidize these loans. Therefore, interest would accrue while the student is enrolled in school. The interest rate is variable, capped at 8.25 percent. There is an origination fee deducted from the loan prior to the minimum of two equal disbursements made to the student’s account. Repayment begins on the date of the second disbursement, but may be deferred while the student is enrolled at least halftime.
  • Alternative Financing Options-Elms College provides information and guidance about the most competitive payment and financing plans available. Several low interest alternative loan programs are available through private lending institutions to help pay the difference between financial aid awarded and the total balance due to the college. We encourage students to investigate these sources, or call student financial aid services for application information.
  • Assistantships- A limited number of graduate assistantships are available each semester in various departments and offices on the Elms College campus. Information is available from program directors and advisors.
  • Tuition Vouchers- In appreciation for the learning experiences provided to our full-time practicum students, Elms College issues one three-credit voucher per student to the full-time practicum supervisor.
